Captain Daniel Stone Inn
10 Water Street Brunswick, ME 04011
Property Description This outstanding Federal Style home was built for Captain Daniel Stone and his family in 1819. Captain Daniel Stone became a successful merchant after he retired from the U.S. Navy in the early 1800s. He and his wife, Nancy Hinckley, had two children, Narcissa and Daniel. The captain also served as a Brunswick Representative to the State Legislature. Brunswick has earned its reputation for good living over its 300 year history. This coastal town has been home of the prestigious liberal arts school, Bowdoin College, since 1794 and is host to Brunswick Naval Air Station, which was first commissioned in 1943 to train British and Canadian Pilots. A summer theatre, two museums, two excellent libraries, many good restaurants, and its classic New England architecture complete its charming ambiance. Brunswick is just a 15 minute drive North of the famous town of Freeport, Maine, which is known for its many factory outlet stores and L.L. Bean. Miss Narcissa Stone became a prominent figure in the community after she inherited considerable land and property from her father upon his death in 1825. She held on to her inheritance tenaciously, improving the land and developing nearby property. The Stone Family Estate, on which the Inn now stands, was known as Narcissas Hill to the townspeople for the better part of the 19th century. Narcissa passed away at the age of 76, in 1877, after having led a full life and becoming an important part of Brunswicks history. All rooms and suites have been tastefully decorated in keeping with the Federal Style of the original Stone Family Home. Each room is individually designed using different wall coverings, window treatments, plush carpeting, ceramic tile, museum prints, fine furniture representing the Federal period, silk or real floral arrangements, and plants. Each room has its own private bathroom, several have whirlpool tubs, color cable television with video cassette player, full length mirror, table or desk. |
